Soberlink: What Is It? I Mean, Why Do They Want Me To Use It Anyway?

Most people employ a breathalyzer called a Soberlink, and it uses facial recognition software to verify the user’s identity before each test. Soberlink’s cloud-based recovery management program receives BAC readings wirelessly in real-time. Scheduled sobriety checks, notifications, and automated reports can all be configured in the Soberlink System.

Chris Beck, a Soberlink expert, joins us to discuss the company’s work in the field, the technology behind their product, the ways in which it has been implemented in the legal system, and the efforts they have made to discourage the politicization of alcoholism. In fact, you’ll see how their goals in creating the tool overlap with ours: to give court-admissible proof of sobriety in an effort to reestablish health and safety in your most critical relationships, children at the top of the list.

The alcohol concentration in the breath is measured while the person is in mid-exhale using the breathalyzer function. Breath tests are used by police to determine a suspect’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) since alcohol in the bloodstream easily flows past the alveolar wall into the air cell. The Soberlink device can identify the effects of two drinks up to five hours after consumption, or five drinks (binge drinking) up to twelve hours after consumption. The Soberlink device takes a picture of the user at the precise moment an exhaled air sample is collected. In order to verify the identity of the sample provider, the device employs facial recognition software. The device is also equipped with temperature recognition and other tamper-proof measures. Once the sample BAC is recorded, the result is submitted electronically to Soberlink and communicated nearly quickly to the PHP, which is alerted of a positive result.
